Question Clutch Pack Replacement

I'm getting ready to replace the clutch pack on my 09 SG with the SE clutch pack. Is there anything I should look out for? The kit says do not re-install the damper spring and damper spring seat. I will also install the SE clutch spring. I'll dip the clutch pack in oil before assembly. Anything else?

TIA,
MJ

I swapped the stock clutch for a SE clutch pack. The problem now is the clutch is dragging/walking with the clutch pulled in. Adjustments made... It still drags. I cant get it in neutral while running. During installation of the clutch pack, the steel plates were hard to install. They did not slide on easily. The stock parts came out like butter. Could this be whats causing the clutch to drag or stay slightly engaged?

If they were hard to install, and did not slide on easily...

I'd have to open it back up and check the drum for wear. Sometimes, the hub will get grooves in the edge(s) of the channels that the plates ride in. No matter what the cause, the difficulty during installation is suspiciously pointing to a need for a closer inspection.

both your friction and steels should slid right in PERIOD. if not then they are getting hung up on the clutch basket and that is whats causing you grief. You need to get them out of there. also, if its the steel plates that didnt slide in easily u could re use the old steels with the new friction plates as steel plates dont usually wear. they warp from heat so u can check to see if they are warped by placing on a flat surface. Ive re used steels many times with no issues what so ever

Mikeo33y, correct! I spoke with Harley today and apparently they have a quality issue the SE clutch pack. They will do a warranty part replacement. During the stamping process, the clearance on the steel plates have been off. To prevent someone else from having to do it twice, have the shop test fit the steel plates on a drum they have in the shop. As for me, disassembled, replaced the steel plates, adjusted, and all is good! Even noticed the first gear shift clunk is greatly reduced! I mean greatly reduced, almost unnoticeable.

I wouldn't waste my $ on SE parts. Get a good clutch once and be done with it. Barnett is one.

I have just had this problem. The steel plates do not slide on, they catch. No all of them, just some of them. I am going to return them or file them... I may use some of the stock plates. What should the stack height be? The SE kit part# 37980-10
comes with 9 disks and 8 steel plates and advises you not to use the damper spring and seat. I measured the disks and they are .144-.150 the steels are .61
