2005 ultra,, gonna install a oil temp gauge in place of the air temp gauge, people say no thread sealant some say use some on top threads, now I know this is a tapered pipe hole and care needs to be taken not to damage the pan ,, but the ? is if I use the liquid Teflon will it still make a ground for the sender? seems to me if I don't use a sealant of some sort that I will develop a leak at that connection. let me here from you people that have gone both ways.
thanks mike
I'm considering installing this gauge too. my issue is if I do install it I will not be able to use the scavenger system oil change method anymore. I don't think taking out the sending unit is gonna be good for it(and me) and way around this?
I installed the McKewan oil temp gauge at least five years ago, with NO sealant or tape, and it has held up fine with no leaks at all. A word of warning: the sending unit does NOT go in the drain plug. It goes in an unused plug near the drain plug, and it is tapered, so don't force it too tight.
Used Teflon tape on mine. No problems with it and it's been 3 years now. If I remember correctly it's a two wire system +ve -ve from sender to gauge.
mine is a 1 wire sensor,, so just wondering if the liquid pipe dope will still let it ground,, putting it there dry or wthout tape just does not seem right to me,, i think ill just use a lil liquid teflon on the top threads to get a final seal
thanks

that is the one that iam putting in tomorrow ,(McKewan), did the sensor need an adaptor or was it 3/8 pipe allready , ( or did it need the 1/8x3/8 adaptor), and yes that is the hole that i will be using.
thanks
What is the temperature range on the oil temp gauge? 200 to 400 degrees?
Does that gauge have a silver face like the rest of my gauges?
Thanks!
H-D gauge has an odd temp range. Takes a while to get used to. If I remember correctly it goes from 110 to 350 F. As for background color, they come in both silver or black to match what you have.
