I think about this often because I only own a few things that really matter. My bike is damn high on that list. I've worked and modded that bike to where I want it. I also discovered I really enjoy the peace & calm that comes from turning a wrench. I have insurance and I "did" ride year round (NJ salt stopped that).

Really good Insurance, is all I can say, my brother has gone through 4 R1's in the last 2 years. The bikes are light easy to pick up and move into the back of a truck. Not something you can easily do with a 500+ pound bike, not saying it can't be done but... it is a lot harder.

I have customized every bike I've owned, but I really try to keep it low-key. I like keeping my bike almost stock looking. But with lots of little details that aren't obviously costly.

I bought it to ride, and enjoy the ride... had it since march, managed to put 6,000 miles on it, would have had more on it if i could get more time off work... just completed a 4,000 mile ride from Oregon, thru Utah and back... picked up some scratches, chips, pits, etc... not that i'm not careful, but **** happens... got home washed the bugs off, buffed out the scratches, and waxed it.
I ride year around in Oregon, including the rain with both bikes... its not going to be a garage queen, and neither is my BMW with 82,000 miles on it... I could never enjoy riding this much if i worried about what might happen to my bike. when the bad stuff happens, if its something i can't live with, I fix it, and if its really bad, well there is insurance...
If you really want to enjoy riding, forget about the little stuff happening, just enjoy the 'ride', even if that means parking at the local Walmart & getting hit by a shopping cart...
A lot of truth in what your saying smoke.

I put a 120r in a salvage titled bike, and it looks like it too. All scratched, dented, and rained upon. Bent pipes, no tour pack, two different colored bags, etc.

Runs and ride great, looks like crap. Perfect bike for me. Sometimes, I will spray some Hydrogen Peroxide on the fairing and rinse off the bugs, tho. That 120r sticker on the engine comes right off, too.

My money goes to performance and dependability. Never had anyone mess with it at motels or parked downtown NYC for a 911 run a few years ago.

I enjoy modding my bike , I ride everyday to ,my bike is my only transportation matter of fact. Is or will it be over modded , probably so in some peoples eyes. If it gets stolen sure I will be pissed at first but that's what the insurance is for. If a thief wants your bike it's they will get it in the garage or on the street , so ride it and enjoy it !!
