I am approaching 20K on my 2012 FLHTK and ready to change brake pads... What kind do you recommend?
I've always had good results from the factory pads. They're quiet, don't make a lot of dust, have good bite and feel and they aren't hard on the rotors. BTW how much material do you have remaining? I'm curious as I'm approaching 20k with my original pads and have what looks like about .100 left. Minimum is I believe .016.
I do my own brake pad change out's (08 FLHR), and many friends pre 08 & newer FL's. Have only used factory OEM HD pads with good results. The pads are quality Brembo.
Since 2008 I was using the Lyndall pads. A few weeks back I needed front pads, I had a set of rears in my cabinet. I went to the dealer and got the brembo for the front and am very happy with them. I haven't had any issues with the Lyndall, but after 3 k miles on the brembos, I am very happy.
I just put new pads on with 17,000 miles on the bike -- weren't worn out but didn't think they would make the life of the new tire I put on -- in the past I have used both EBC and Harley -- don't see much difference -- this time it was Harley pads
At the end of the day, the OEM's are fine. A little dusty, but they do a good job.
In addition, I've used both the Lyndall Z+ and the Lyndall Gold+. The Z+ have stopping issues in wet weather but put out nearly no dust at all. The Gold+ pads stop great dry or wet, and put out a tad more dust. Of course the OEMs are the most dusty of the three in my experience.
If you go OEM, order them online to save money. Several vendors out there that will offer discounts off retail, plus you save sales tax and sometimes get shipping free if you pass a certain purchase threshold.
