when I bought my bike it has syn3 in all 3 holes, I didn't like how the bike performed so I went with Amsoil shockproof 90/140 or in the trans, mobil 1 v-twin 20/50 in the engine and formula+ in the primary. this is the best combination for me so far.............
Not really sure what it does but I've read that the kit has solved some of the noise problems, also read that some of the compensators weren't torqued correctly and a re-torque helped...I'll update when they install it and meanwhile I'll ask my Indy (who I trust completely) about the Red Line as Safety suggested.
This compensator shim kit, ask your indy for the part number. Wondering minds would like more information on this.
Before you worry about putting in a shim kit, switch from Syn 3 back to HD Formula +. It made a HUGE difference in my '14. The compensator was getting really noisy, sounded like hell. I had some formula plus in the garage and dumped the Syn 3 and put that in. The noisy compensator TOTALLY quieted down, no more noise at all now. The synthetic just doesn't seem to have the thicker viscosity formua + does. I was amazed how it solved the noise issue so quickly. It doesn't matter what guys used to run in their OLDER bikes, I will run nothing my Formula + in my '14 from now on
F+ works just fine logged many miles with it in primary not one problem on any of the bikes. You just don't need any magic special lube in the primary.
I don't know why dealerships keep putting Syn3 in the primary and transmission. It calls for F+ in the manual. It probably came with it from the factory.
My local dealership keeps insisting on Syn3 being "OK" even though the manual calls for something else. They won't budge on that for the 1k service...but the dealership in Santa Fe will. AND they will let me bring my own oil for the service. So it looks like a 200 mile round trip is in order for my 1k service.
Syn3 is listed as an acceptable option in the service manual.
It even lists it right on the bottle.
The dealers "recommend" this probably because Harley says it is OK.
HD even ships all of their CVO bikes out with Syn3 right from the factory.
I've been using Syn3 in mine without any issues for over 35,000 miles.
