Took my bike for the 30,000 mile maintenance and the Master tech is telling me that it sounds like i need to replace my Stator and possiable starter!!! He said i wouldn't believe how many he has already changed!! Cost is about 1,200.00. Any suggestions??

On my 2008, my primary bearing went out at 68,000 miles. I sold it at 71,000 miles with original stator and starter.

What does a bad stator sound like? did he follow the appropriate testing procedure? Or is he that good?

What leads him to say "sounds like" replace stator? Anyhow, you can replace a boatload of parts yourself for the $1200. If you indeed need a stator and/or a starter, do it all yourself. Replace IPB, compensator, gaskets, tensioner, etc for about $800.

I am curious what sort of sound a stator makes when going bad? I may be wrong but that "sounds" like BS.

When you try to start the bike it sounds like the starter is engaging and letting go before the engine starts and then re-engaging. Gears are skipping and grinding. Does not do it every time but 1 out of 5 cranks it will.

Check starter clutch, check compensator, check ring gear. Sounds like starter clutch.

Do you still have the stock compensator? Because I have had two compensators on two different bikes replaced at roughly the same mileage........Around 35K miles. Both situations sounded very similar to what you described.

If it ain't broke, DON'T FIX IT! Fix the starter (replace it) and move on.
