I started up my 06 SG this morning for my first ride of the season. It' s only got 1800 miles on it. When I started it up I heard a knocking/clanging sound while the engine was idling. By time I got to work, the sound has stopped. I am very mechanically declined, can anyone tell me if I should be really worried or what?
Only thing I can think of is that if the bike has sat for a long time the oil had drained off the surfaces and it started "dry". I've not had mine do that but just a thought!!!
primary chain may need adjusting. my neighbor's 03 needed adjusting sevral times in the first couple of thousand miles. it can get quieter when it warms up.
Its best to start bikes at least once a month while in storage or you could pull the plug wires off and let it turn over some with the starter to get the oil flow going then put the wires back on and start it. Also using a good syn oil (not syn3) will keep the parts better lubed during long periods of not being run.
Hmmmm. Has it done it again in a cold start? If it makes all this noise as you say on cold starts, let it warm up and ride it to the service department. You might check for loose exhaust clamps, etc. before you get too worried. I've traced an odd rattle or two to those exhaust clamps......and one to a muffler hanger bracket squeak. Stuff happens!
