Default Ultra Classic vs Dyna

it's been a couple of years since I've posted here, but have been lurking around in the background. my last bike was an 03 RKC, I didn't like the ride as much as my 08 Fat Boy. I never felt comfortable on the RK. when I sold the King, I thought I was through riding. BUT - NO! at 65 and with bad knees (thanks Army) I'm looking at getting something to ride. I've got a line on a 06 Ultra Classic with a pretty good price. I'm a little concerned it might prove to be a little too heavy to hold up at stops. my thoughts were to remove the tour pack, making it more like a Street Guide and make it a single rider bike. then in a couple of years, trike it. my riding will only be a hundred miles or so maybe once a month, and short trips around home.

so, my conundrum - do I get the bagger or go to something in the Dyna class? I'm only looking at Dynas for the weight.

I'm a big guy - 6ft and 240lbs.

thanks for reading and posting your opinions.

Default Ultra Vs Dyna

You pose a difficult question to answer without more information.

What do you envision doing with the bike? Do you just want something for around town? Maybe and afternoon cruise for an hour or two at a time?

I really like the Dyna's. I would like one for a second bike. I like to go a thousand or more miles a weekend though, so a dyna would not work for me for a primary bike.

More info please....

100 miles or so once a month and some short weekend trips , I would go with a dyna fat bob it's a great handling bike and imho would be a good fit to the type of riding you described

Trike conversions aren't cheap and I'd want all the motor I could get if I had one. Currently that means the 103 discounting the CVO bikes. If you're concerned about your knees and think a trike is where you'll end up why not do it now? I'd get a factory trike over a kit any day. Some insurance companies won't even cover a conversation kit bike.

I like my Ultra it is set up solo unless I'm on a road trip. The tour pac and pillion seat is hanging on the wall resting for the next trip. The pillion seat is for camp bag and clothing it makes for a good back rest for long days on the road.

Know that this is the HD site, but you might want to look at the new Indian Scout. Light and nimble, or even the Polaris slingshot 3 wheeler.

Think big guys look better on Softails than Dyna's/

Rent, test ride, or demo to answer your question.

Bad knees.....Ultra Classic. Not a good combo. For what you want to do....get another Softail.....Fatboy/Heritage/Deluxe.....put on a Road King style shield.....some removable bags and have at it. You can even purchase Street Glide style shield for a couple hundred bucks. But for the riding you contemplate......you may not need so much bike.

Much as I wouldn't want a trike, (now) I have to agree with this one. If you already have bad knees and question your ability to hold the bike up regardless of weight (700lbs Dyna is hardly light) why take the chance if you know you'll end up there anyway.........get the trike now. As I said, I wouldn't want one now but if it we a choice of not riding on 2 wheels vs riding on 3 there's no question.
