I had a gps plugged into the cig lighter on a rental bike and after the 3rd day the fuse blew out. Not sure why?

This is what I was going to do tonight. I don't see why it would be a problem, but then again, I'm no electrician.

It's not a problem at all. Mine has been wired to the battery for 2 years now.

On my 2014 TG I used the car mount suction cup from my Zumo and stick it on the gas cap lid and then plug into the cig lighter.
I do that because the H-D GPS is a POS. Very glad I kept my Zumo.

Good luck

This is the way I did both of my Zumos. Not only is the cradle always powered, but if you have a power outage or blow a fuse on the road, it's a lot easier to take the seat off to check connections and fuse instead of the fairing.

You mean you don't warm the bike up for 20 minutes before you start?!

On the one hand a gps takes very little power, however on the other, I have added several extras to my bike using an added auxiliary circuit.

Also give some thought to where you place your gps, especially if you regularly carry a passenger. By chance I mounted mine off-centre, only to find that Mrs B can read it. If we find ourselves in heavy traffic, or negotiating tight hairpin bends, she can give me hints and tips over our intercom. Works very well!

Mine is wired into the extra in the fairing. Plugging into the cig lighter in the front would allow moisture and corrosion to develop.

The new GPS take about 1 minuet to lock on outside so wait time is nominal compared to the old GPS that took several minuets.

When I am getting ready to roll since the GPS has a like a 3 hour battery I can turn it on then program my address in the garage in the shade, then get my gear on then back the bike out and it is locked by the time I have the door closed and the bike started.

If out and about it take seconds to lock on again as it looks starting from your last location.

This way I don't have to worry about leaving the GPS on when I shut it down especially for several days and risk a dead battery when the battery starts to get old, or sitting for while and I forget.

+1 on the use of the cigarette power receptacle and using the mount system from the Leader Motorcycle folks. The mount was rock solid, didn't vibrate on our 2000 mile trip.

Mine is just plugged into my cig lighter and it's mounted on a ram mount. Served me well for the last 1 1/2 years.

Ok. Just got my 590LM in today pretty nice unit. Checking out the wire harness and the connections. Going to go with the extra wires in the headlight harness for the power. Where the heck am I going to run all the other connectors. Audio in and out, headphone jack and the usb? I was thinking about running the USB into the glove box on the right since I use the lighter on the left for my phone. Just not sure where to secure the other connectors. Suggestions?

Thanks
