Default GPS Install Question

I just picked up a Garmin 590LM and am thinking about doing the install. Not sure what would be best place to wire it thinking cigarette lighter. Anyone done this? Thoughts tips, tricks?

Thanks

Wire it to any circuit that's hot when you turn switch on...

There is an extra switched set of wires in the headlight area (there is on my '09 Ultra anyway)

I tapped into the cig lighter for my GPS since the spare headlight leads were used for the XM. I just cut the wires, tapped 2 extra leads off the wire, and reconnected them with heat shrink butt connectors. So I have 2 spare power leads and the cig lighter still works. I never use the cig lighter, but if I had to, I could. I'd just make sure the GPS is off to avoid blowing a fuse. It was very easy and took about 10 minutes.

I just installed one on my Limited. I picked up power from the optional wires at the headlight. You can pick up some insulated connectors and it will plug right in. If you want to get carried away, wire an aux connector to the back of your radio for a clean, weather tight connection.....http://blog.ironacesspeedshop.com/ho...vidson-stereo/

I've always used the two extra wires in the headlight harness, there's a black and a red ( with cap over it) close to the headlight connector. I was told these wires were for European daytime running lights, don't know for sure.
Anyway these wires work great, only on when ignation is on....easy peasy

Don't worry about turning off the gps it draws very little power and should not blow fuse if left on when you use the cig lighter.

I just installed a Garmin 2797LMT using Leader Motorcycle mounts for the control switch box ( I used the clutch control) and it is awesome. I just plugged directly into the cigarette lighter with the power cord that came with the unit and it works fine. Just like plugging into the cigarette lighter terminal in your car.

Thanks for all the help. Going to give it a shot and do it myself. Going to also try the hard wire to the aux. Let you know how it works out. Try to post some pics.

Ride safe

Looks like I'm in the minority. I wired mine to the battery. I want the cradle hot all the time. I put the GPS in the cradle as I'm getting ready to ride. That way it's ready to go when I am. I don't have to wait for it to boot and acquire satellites before I take off.
