Or better still, have it Dynoed IF you have a shop near by that REALLY understands the PV. Truth is, EVERY bike benefits from a proper tune stock or not.
Decatted header, slip ons, and stock breather doesn't require a tuner. I totally agree that a good tuner or dyno will make the bike run better but it's not required until he changes his stock air cleaner. Besides the Xieds should've fixed his problem. I'm just not certain pinging is what he's hearing. I think it's rocker arm chatter personally.

Could be rocker arm? He didn't say how many miles are on it. That info maybe helpful too.

xieds didn't stop my ping with slip-ons and intake, help but not cured.with just slip-ons they worked for me.there are hundreds of tolerances that can add up no 2 harleys will run the same, just because iEDs worked for one doesn't mean they work for all.GET A TUNE.

My 2010 Limited had rocker arm chatter when I bought it with 10,000 miles on it. Of course the dealer says it's normal though!!!!

XIED didn't stop my pinging when it was STOCK. Went to Dobeck TFI and that did the trick. Only ping I have got since installing the TFI was 102 degrees and low elevation (vegas) and a turn of a screw would have taken care of that.

At first I thought it was my gremlin bell, but I don't think it is. It is pinging between 2800 and 3000 RPM's right where I like to cruise. I was hoping to avoid getting a tuner. All I wanted was a little more sound and a cooler running engine. I'm not into having the fastest bike. So, I'm currently saving up for a powervision, thinking that will get rid of the ping, also an adjustable riders backrest, and a set of 10 inch ape hangers (to relieve the pain between my shoulder blades). Approximately, 1500$ dollars wort of stuff. Will this madness never end!!!! Why does my bike ping between 2800 and 3000 RPM's when it is hot outside?
Carbon build up in the TC motors is becoming more of an issue due to tuning, fuel quality and riding style.
I would suggest if you can get pure gas and run it for a tank or 2 then: Install 5 oz of Chevron Techron injector cleaner concentrate, fill the tank with pure gas premium if you can get it. Run the engine hard through 2 treated tank fills. If you are using Mobile 1 Vtwin or Amsoil 20w50 syn oil, change oil and filter and install 20w50 Dino oil in engine only. Ride it and determine if noise is gone.

Or just use Chevron all of the time.

What does oil have to do with ping?

I was going to suggest the same thing.
I have a 2013 FLHTC and just came back from a 3,200 mile trip.
During the trip, I developed a knock on cold starts and it pings pretty much consistently when warmed up.
I have a little over 8k miles and all stock except for slip-ons
I always run 93 oct.

Still under warranty, so brought it to the dealer.
Said I probably had some carbon build up on the pistons, they'd been seeing a lot of that lately because of poor quality gas.
Not sure if BS or not, but they said if you're buying 93 oct., you're lucky if you're actually seeing 89-90 oct. at the pump.
They pulled the plugs, scoped and verified carbon build up on the top of the pistons.
Dumped Seafoam in the gas, installed new plugs and test rode it for 40 miles. (forgot to ask what the old plugs looked like)
Scoped again and said the carbon was starting to disappear.
The ping and knock was almost gone when I picked it up.
I'm on my 2nd tank of gas with Seafoam and the knock-ping is just about gone.
Will use it for the next 3-4 tanks and then stop using it.
If the ping comes back, I'll bring it back to the dealer and have them look into it further.
I'm under warranty til next summer.

Try a tank or two of gas with Seafoam and see what happens........

1. My bike has 16,500 miles on it
2. I did not change intake and exhaust, just exhaust, running the stock breather
3. If it is valve train noise, I don't understand why it only does it when hot and when I accelerate above 3000 rpm it goes away.
4. I disagree with assertion that running 2800-3000 rpm is lugging the motor. Sometimes this occurs at 2800-3000 rpm in 5th gear
