I have a 2012 Ultra Classic. I'm running a decatted stick head pipe, stock air cleaner, Bassani slip ons and XIED's. When it is very hot outside ( above 85 degrees), I'm getting some pinging. At first I thought it was my gremlin bell, but I don't think it is. It is pinging between 2800 and 3000 RPM's right where I like to cruise. I was hoping to avoid getting a tuner. All I wanted was a little more sound and a cooler running engine. I'm not into having the fastest bike. So, I'm currently saving up for a powervision, thinking that will get rid of the ping, also an adjustable riders backrest, and a set of 10 inch ape hangers (to relieve the pain between my shoulder blades). Approximately, 1500$ dollars wort of stuff. Will this madness never end!!!! Why does my bike ping between 2800 and 3000 RPM's when it is hot outside?
I wonder if it isnt valve train clatter. When they get hot, it happens.
I too thought I was pinging like a *b1tch*, but when I did my 107, turns out my pistons were fine. Verdict: Valve train clatter.
(spectators out there can be forgiven for dismissing this theory because if you've been reading my posts, you'd conclude that I think all problems are valve train noise. Fair point)
I don't think it is valve train clatter. Sounds like BB's hitting a a glass coke bottle. I don't know I'm not a mechanic. All I know is that when it's hot outside and I'm cruising between 2800 and 3000 rpm I hear tinkle tinkle tinkle.

Mine sounded like that too. These issues are hard to nail down, for sure.
Mine did the same thing.
I finally bit the bullet over the winter and had the dealer dyno tune my bike.
Ping happened between 2600 and 2800. My bike has not missed a beat since.
