My 13 RGU does the same thing. It sounds like spark knock. I have V&H pro pipe, VO2 air cleaner and a stage one down load. It only happens when it starts to get warm and gets worse the hotter the bike gets. At first it was such a tinny sound it sounded like the horn cover was hitting metal. I don't know if that tune advances the timing, that was the first thing I was going to research...
the stock timing on 12 Touring in that area at 2750 jumps to 41 degrees and 43 at 3000. It is also about 5% too lean there also. Only way I know to cure it is with a tuner. I always reduce the timing in this area to max of 38 usually 36. Has very little change in MPG or performance. Don't have any idea why they want the timing this high in that area. In 14 they dropped it 4 to 5 degrees in the same area. 08 and 09 were lower also. Just the 10 thru 13 was high. The 11 Dyna was low also. The mods you have done have leaned it out more than the XIED's can fix. May also be out of closed loop by then also and they aren't in play. Stage 1 download isn't the answer either as it doesn't address this area at all. Go on and get yourself a tuner, you won't be sorry. You can pick up good performance with one also.

This also makes sense on my 07' as the only time it pings now is when its hot and running 75+MPH
I have a 2012 Ultra Classic. I'm running a decatted stick head pipe, stock air cleaner, Bassani slip ons and XIED's. When it is very hot outside ( above 85 degrees), I'm getting some pinging. At first I thought it was my gremlin bell, but I don't think it is. It is pinging between 2800 and 3000 RPM's right where I like to cruise. I was hoping to avoid getting a tuner. All I wanted was a little more sound and a cooler running engine. I'm not into having the fastest bike. So, I'm currently saving up for a powervision, thinking that will get rid of the ping, also an adjustable riders backrest, and a set of 10 inch ape hangers (to relieve the pain between my shoulder blades). Approximately, 1500$ dollars wort of stuff. Will this madness never end!!!! Why does my bike ping between 2800 and 3000 RPM's when it is hot outside?
What did you set the xied at? Enrich the setting, if it doesn't improve get a PV or whatever tuner you prefer.

Had the same problem with my 2013 TK. I got a tuner, took out 2 degrees of timing in the problem area, no more pinging.

You don't adjust the XIED, its non adjustable. You adjust the VIED. You can see by my sig what I have in mine and it rattles like a marbles in a can around 2300-2600, after that, it calms down and runs perfect. I have mostly flat land around here and I run 87 in mine most of the time with no issues so far (knocking on wood)
