Talking Hardwire Garmin

Hey folks!

I have mostly everything I need to hardwire a Garmin GPS to my 12 FLHX. I have the Garmin USB Power Cable to install. My question to anyone that can help out is where is the best place to connect the wiring up once I get the fairing off. I have heard that there are two wires on the headlight wiring I can use? I'm not an avid electric dude but not afraid of learning....any help would be great and thank you!!!!

On my '11 RKC, there was an unused hot wire behind the headlight for a fender tip light. Removed the cap, it was hot by the switch, male spade connector from the Garmin sealed the deal!

You got that part right. This is way easier than you think, hardest part is getting those bottom two fairing screws out if you don't have a torx socket with an extension, it can be done with the little fold up tool that comes with the bike but you'll be much happier if you have the correct size torx bit and an extension.

Most of the Garmin USB cables are data cables only and not power cables. Make sure you know which one you have.

I have a special USB power cable for my Garmin by 3BR Powersport. It 'tricks' the GPS to think it's using the supplied power cable. I also have their USB power port that plugs directly to the HD accessory plug under the seat. Then I just use the accessory switch to turn it on and off.

It looks like you're good to go major91. Like mentioned before, most use the extra wire in the headlights.

I use this product here at the bottom. The second from the bottom is for a panel mount, like your fairing. http://www.3brpowersports.com/products.php

Then I use this to attach to the GSP. http://www.3brpowersports.com/products_Red_Band_USB.php

Then I can use the USB power port to charge other stuff, like my iPhone or something.

Not sure which Garmin You have but on mine, Zumo 660 you will need a mount to plug that usb cable into otherwise the receptacle is under the battery door and you won't get anything but a "battery door is open" message. But the cable is right all you really need is to splice into the extra head light wires, red to red and black to black then plug a 3.5mm cable into the audio out cable, run it out of the fairing somewhere, I used the handle bar hole, and into the Aux jack on the front of your radio and your done.Test it before you button everything up, yea I know master of the obvious, sorry.

Since my Ultra has a fairing I just hard wired a plug in the fairing and plugged in the power cord that came with my 1490 lmt. Power plug cost $4.00 and tapped into the back of the cigarette lighter in the fairing so it switches on and off with the ignition switch.
