I have a 2012 FLHTK which of course has both a gas gauge and a "distance til empty" setting on the odometer. Today while out riding the gas gauge was a hair off of empty and the DTE setting said that I had 110 km left until the tank was dry.
What do you guys use and which one is to be believed?
I use the trip meter AND odometer. the miles till empty is inaccurate and so is the fuel gauge. Refer to the post 95 miles and I ran out of gas again, that will explain it more dude.
I have zero confidence in motorcycle fuel monitoring instruments. After a fill up I just start looking for a gas station after about 150 miles on the odometer.
I get 225 km in the city from full to when the reserve light comes on.
When I'm on a road trip with the bike on cruise, the light goes on at about 325 km, and if I'm doing manual, about 30 km.
Mine is a stock 96 and I normally ride loaded with gear, but solo.
Lots of converters from kilometres to miles, but I'll bet mine is typical.
When the gas gauge reads just north of 1/4 tank, I fill up. If I was going long distances then I'd do the milage/ tripometer, and base it on 5.5 gallons to give myself a safety cushion.
The DTE doesn't seem accurate. Once on a ride back home I wasn't paying attention and it said I had 20 miles till empty. I then ran out of gas 100 yards from my garage.
