My buddy got some aluminum from a hardware store and then cut and polished it to fit, then stuck some of the stick on HD medalions on them, then stuck everything else in place with 3m tape. looks really good and cost him about 20 bucks
I put the harley decals in my bike. It was a nice touch, and pretty cheap. I like the fatboy inserts though. My recent bike has the Owens inserts and I am looking for a change.
I had thought about the HD medallions also. It looks like these (see pic) might fit in there. I also like the idea of the polished alum. If I could only find something to bring the insert out to flush with the outside of the bag. I called the guy from Caliornia Customs, but he didnt have any ready for sale. The Owens Options are just too expensive although they do look real nice. I just want something to cover that big black hole.
i got the puch button openers that replace the hocky pucks from squad fitters. When I had the bike repainted, i had the painter fill in the two small holes on each side of the original puck openers. Now the lid only has the push button opener...very clean looking and on a black bike the black operners are hardly noticable.
Thanks for all the ideas. A couple observations.
The owens options are solid billet
the ebay ones are chromes plastic (might peel off similar to the way the old chevy truck grills used to do). Not real fond of putting a decal in the space, but the idea that was give on the guys fatboy was nice.
I am still looking for some type of police saddlebag inserts that are NOT the Owens Options style.
I've got the same problem and I don't think the ones from Owens are worth what they are charging. So far, I've got 2 ideas that I'm thinking of...
1. 1/8" aluminum diamond plate polished up a bit to make it look a bit better. The added thickness would help fill out the recess where the inserts go.
2. Some type of stone -- granite or slate probably since they have the more interesting colors. Travertine would be easy to work with, but is a bit more boring. Slate is very easy to work with, but granite would look a lot better.
