If you spend $70 for a battery and keep if for 4 years is costs you $17.50 per year. If you keep it for 5 years it costs you $14 per year. Why would you wait until the lights dim when starting or any other symptom before buying a new one. Is it really worth the pain in the A$$? Go buy an new one and ride in peace.
The OEM supplier to Harley now is East Penn Manufacturing with their AGM (absorbed glass mat) batteries. Their replacements are marketed under the name "Deka", I stocked them at the motorcycle stores I managed. Eliminated a lot of brain damage about discharged or leaky lead/acid. I didn't have to fill or charge them, they were good to go out of the box. BTW, the military also uses them and chopper mfr's used them for years before HD. Google "Deka" for outlets.
Here in Central Florida we feel that if a car battery lasts 4 years we did good. I would guess the same could be said about bike batteries. After four years I replace just to be on the safe side. I've had batteries fail with no warning at the worse of times. With all the money we lavis on our toys a 70 to 90 dollar battery every four years is nothing. I have heard that the gel batteries last longer but are much more expensive.[sm=icon_cheers.gif]
I read someplace a few years back, but can't confirm it.
Yuasa actually makes the interstate motorcycle battery
and also the HD one too.
My original HD battery in my 01 EG sat on the back porch
from 03/2002 until 2 months ago. no tender or anything.
Checked at 4.89 volts
Slow charged it off and on for a couple weeks and came
back to full charge. Only holds a couple days though without the
trickle charger on it. But it will start the bike unassisted.
Well it's cold and nesty again today and supposed to be through the
weekend.
So no working on the bike outside this week.
At this rate I might get the fuel optimizer in in May or June and tuned
by July.
2003 RK here and my battery still seems to be good. But I do not want to take chances on a 5 year old battery. Battery sometimes go out with no warning and since I am going on a week trip I do not want to risk it. 5 years is good enough for me and from experience HD carries a good reliable battery that lasts.
