Back in saddle
So looking to get back in the saddle after being away.Found a 2000 RK with 17kmi on it one owner. Really don't have a lot of time for big mile rides just 100-200 mile ones a week rides. So spending over 10g not in budget. Bike is in excellent condition with service records.Owner is asking $8500 neg. What would a good price be and what should I be looking for on this year and model bike.
$8125 is top dollar on an "excellent" condition 2000 RK according to KBB.
Sounds like he's looking to get 8K out of it. The 500 is a buffer zone.
If you really like and want the bike, I'd offer him $7500 and go from there. But then I like to "horse trade" a bit.

I would check and see if he has changed or upgraded the cam chain tensioners. They are substandard on pre-07 Twin Cams motors and if you search this site, you could read for days.
If he hasn't, you will need to. Consider that in your negotiations.
I love my '99 RK by the way. 76k miles and it runs like a dream. The early Twin Cam motors had a better built lower end than later models. I think you will enjoy the heck out of that bike.

It's the end of biking season for northern states, a buyer's market, you should be able to find a great deal if you're patient. Also, you may be able to score a 2009 for around 10k which has some improvements over prior years, but 10k is probably on the low end for something that new.
