Default Headset Issue - Intermittent?

Wife and I have Shoei modular helmets with J&M headsets. For the first couple outings everything worked great. We could talk comfortably to each other in normal voices. I even got a phone call while traveling 70 mph and the guy who called me had no idea I was on a motorcycle. On a recent ride, I could not hear my wife talk. She could hear me fine as well as the music we were listening to. I thought it was a headset problem like her mic wire pulled out so I took it back to where we bought the helmets and headsets. No problems noted. As a test I plugged my headset into the rear plug and hers into the front plug. Then I could hear her but she couldn't hear me. Okay, it's the wiring in the rear plug, right? But yesterday after a lunch ride I plugged both headsets in for the ride home and I could hear her fine. I will take it to the dealer but I also know there is nothing worse than an intermittent problem when it comes to diagnosis, especially when it is working like it should. So I'm gathering as much information as I can before I take it in and just wondering if anybody else has experienced something like this.

Yes, on a recent 3500 mile trip this would happen to us about 3-4 times a day. Passenger volume would drop off the display and might or might not come back until we stopped and cycled the main switch off and back on. Took it in to the dealer and they say it's the Info-don't-work-tainment system and put in the latest update. So far it has been working, but we gave up on the HD intercom and are fitting our helments with the Sena 20S headsets. I'm also adding the SM10 adapter with cord for the HD so I can try to bluetooth the radio/media/GPS instructions to the Sena headsets. BTW we were using all J&M hardware and tried new lower cords, helmet switching and nothing worked. I could hear a very faint crackling in my headset when she dropped off.

Mine just started doing that too . I run J&M which worked great for a while and then we had to start turning the volume up to hear each other. Took it to the dealer and they installed the new update but we haven't had a chance to try it yet. Glad to hear I'm not the only one with this problem.

I don't think it has anything to do with the headset from J&M. We have 2 sets of helmets fitted with their premium headsets and they both did the same thing. I got the new Sena headsets and SM10 adapter installed yesterday. Static testing in the garage says it works. Hope to get in some ride time today and test it out rolling.

I agree , I think it is a problem with the Boom box . Hopefully the update fixed it.

livin2ride2, I'm very interested in how your setup worked out. Does the XM radio or FM, intercom & GPS work? How about voice commands? Thanks for your feedback.

Ok Woody here is what I have. We mounted the Sena 20S units on the helmets and I temporarly mounted the Sena SM10 dual streaming adapter on the tank, with the accessory wire plugged into the bikes tank outlet and the Sena units audio port (bike has to be in the headset setting).

We used the Sena units for Intercom and the SM10 for radio/IPod/GPS (sorry I don't have XM). We took about a 75 mile ride this morning and it all seemed to work as planned. The 1 thing I didn't do is test the GPS giving instructions, but I see no reason it won't work.

This is a half and half setup now, I can't talk to the bike, but I have the Sena units to connect to my phone (should I want to) and the voice commands thru the Sena units work fine. In all honesty all I will use this for is Intercom on the Sena and music/GPS info from the bike and that all worked as I wanted.

Is it the best setup, probably not, but it is the best I've had since I bought the 2015 with the Infotainment system. What I really like is now I have a backup. If the Infotainment system takes a dump, as it did on our trip, I have the Sena units for Intercom and I can plug my $20 MP3 player into the SM10 unit and have tunes. Best of all the wife loves the new setup, she says it's the best we've had.

Wife and I have used the Sena SMH10 units for years. OUTSTANDING units for bike to bike intercom. They do everything advertised. Bluetooth to phone and MP3 players. Biggest thing (my opinion) is the Jog Dial. 1 button to do almost all functions. If you are wearing gloves it is hard to find (feel) the buttons on other units. IF anything ever happens to these units I'll buy the 20S units in a heartbeat.
