Mine has just acted up; push the button and only the solenoid clicks. I just turned 12k on my 2012 Tri. So the motor is easy to rebuild? Maybe I'll try it; or just spray the crap out of if with electric cleaner.
The brushes are spring loaded. You might be able to just pull the back off and check them .As mentioned before be careful with the type of lube used. I was able to get the motor off by pulling the right side wheel and using a long extension. It's a simple job and will save you a lot of money if you can do it yourself .
The brushes on my 2011 were stuck like you described so I did the same thing.
Cleaned and lubed the holders and everything was good for about 6 months. Then it failed again.
I got a rebuild kit from Terry's Components for about $270.
Put that in and all is well.

That might just be the breaker has popped open, you might want to try resetting it before spending any money.

I am not sure about the Terry's kit, but according to the info in post 8 above the HD kit: "It is a kit with new armature, brushes, coils, bearings, basically everything but the hard case on the outside."
I can't find the instructions PDF online anywhere.
If I had to lose one feature from my Trike for the rest of its life, I would sacrifice the electric reverse. In a year, with 10K miles, I have rarely used it. It is actually easier for me to push back my Trike than my 2 wheelers.
