Hi, this is my first Harley, a 18 triglide
Most of the time I downshift while slowing down, but once in a while I come to a complete stop first.
when this happens, she wont downshift past 3rd unless I use my foot to move the bike back a little..
my dealer says this is normal and there is no problem...
the warranty is up in December, so I’m a little concerned if this is true or not or Should I take it too different dealer.
Dealer is correct. You should downshift to first before you come to a complete stop. You can go back and forth between first and second to find neutral when stopped but that's about it. Smarter people than me can explain the actual mechanics involved.
You typically should let the clutch lever out (at least partially out) between each gear. When you pull the clutch lever in, the gear set eventually stops moving and the dog won't pick up the next gear and you're stuck in limbo until you let the clutch out to start spinning the gear set again.
If you find yourself improperly shifting like that, and you're stuck in a higher gear, let the clutch lever out some, downshift, let clutch lever out, downshift, etc.
The HD transmission doesn't have synco's like a car transmission. It can only shift up or down if the two gears you are trying to mesh together line up. If they don't, you have to move a little so they do. If you downshift wile coming to a stop, you are moving and there isn't an issue. The lack of syncro's is why these bikes can also be a bitch to find neutral.
