Default Question about my husbands freewheeler?

So we have had this issue for over a year now he has a 2016 freewheeler and when it sits for longer then a few days it wont start we have replaced the regulator and battery no corrosion on anything and still it does this he says its getting all the right amps everywhere we just can seem to find out why the battery is so drained? Once it running no lights dim and it doesnt die out while running kinda at a lose what it could be any answers would be appreciated thank you.

Need more information of his testing procedure: @ around 2000 RPM +- battery should show 14.5 Volts. Engine off connect multimeter black lead to ground.Touch red probe to a fin on the regulator/ rectifier. Meter should show low resistance. If more than a fraction of an ohm check mounting screws and look for corrosion. OK? Then next with engine off disconnect the lead from the stator to regulator. Attach a test light from ground on bike and touch the probe to the connector on regulator. Then touch the other connector, if lamp glows than regulator is defective. OK? Than proceed to a stator test.

I had a similar problem with my Streetglide. Turned out to be the voltage regulator. It was draining the battery.

Welcome.

There is a sticky thread in the electrical sub forum that has a procedure on how to diagnose the charging system. You’ll need a DMM and some basic technical skills.

You can replace regulators all day long but if the stator is bad that's what you'll keep doing. Also have him make sure all battery connections/ grounds, are clean and tight before beginning, sometimes that's the problem. Does he have the electrical diagnostics manual?

If it's the original 4yr old battery, it may be toast. Has the battery been load-tested?

4 years is so-so for factory battery. I would expect more, if it is rode regularly. Especially in MI, where it is not being damaged by heat. That being said it does sound likely, if it runs fine, and won't start after sitting for a few days.

What I would do is disconenct the battery for a few days, and then see if it starts. If it does, it is not the battery. Free and easy way to check.

After that I would get a DC clamp on, and clamp the battery cable when not running. If you see amps, then pull fuses one at a time and see when it goes away.

Also need to check AC output of the stator. Though if you are riding all day off it, I would think it is fine. Though I have ran off the battery for 10 miles and dozen starts or so.

If you don't have the ability to do these checks, then I would disconnect battery for few days. Plus it is easy. You could do it right now, and then think about the rest, or until you get time to do the rest. Besides being easy, not stressing battery with a load test.

Need to consider what its doing.

Has he been riding it like this? If so if does fine, probably not grounds or charging. Plus people fixate on grounds to much, it takes to two tango. I wonder how many have had a bad ground in last 30 years, on newer equipment.

Not to say not to check charging, but I would not start there.
