At the 10K svc is when the plugs get pulled for inspection or replacement (Same as the AC unit), not the 1k....
Look in the back of your owners manual, for the service interval chart....
FWIW, if a customer were to remove a plug, and the threads are galled or pulled out, the chances of that warrenty claim being approved decrease something fierce....
We put in a lot of heli coils at work. Never had a failure. All mechanical fixes. Mostly aluminum parts repaired many times, (Robots) automotive assembly plant. Hope you get this fixed.

Not so. Both the 2009 Touring Owner's Manual and the 2009 TG Owner's Manual require that the spark plugs be checked at 1k, 5k, 10k, and 15k, then replaced at 20k. I checked with the service departments at two dealers, and they confirmed that they check them at 1k.
You may be right about HD refusing to pay if the owner does his own work, but what's the logic there? They don't require everyone to get all of their work done by a dealer. When you pull a plug and the thread galls, there is not much any tech can do. My dealer confirmed this.

I worked for many years as a professional engineer and did some mechanical design, and while I never did automotive design, it seems to me that the heads would be improved if they were originally designed to have steel inserts in the spark plug ports. I will find out tomorrow whether my local dealer has any info that would indicate that a helicoil fix is not as desirable as a new head.

I agree with you. I have the 2009 TG Service manual and it states the plugs are to be pulled and checked just as you stated.
Boy, I'm curious. I had a plug thread go bad on my "06" Road King. I pulled the head to due a heli-coil and the Napa book said that the smallest coil was 14mm. The Harley used a 12mm plug. I don't recall a change in plug size in the last few years, or has heli-coil now making a 12mm coil? By the way I drilled out the head and used the 14 mm coil and a comparable plug.

Thanks. Your input is very encouraging, and I appreciate it. I took our TG in to Dealer B today and told them I wanted helicoils in both heads, since even the plug in the rear cylinder was dragging a little. They did the job and I brought it back home. They talked to the HD rep, who said that Dealer A should have discovered the galling problem on the 1000 mile maintenance and filed a claim. I will talk to Dealer A again tomorrow to see if they will reimburse me. My cost was only $119 for two heads. Still, either Dealer A should pay, or HD should pay. If neither one does, that's Strike One against HD in my book, and I only allow two strikes. After that, I will get rid of our Harleys and start buying BMWs.

I checked the plugs in both mine and my dads today and the front plug came out with no problem, turned out by fingers once loose. I put anti-seeze on them and re-installed The rear plug was another story. Both turned about 2 turns and then I met resistance so I stopped and turned them back in. I called the service mgr and got a rash of crap from him which I expected, the guy reminds me of one of those nervous little yapping dogs. Anyway, he started crabbing on why did I read something on the internet and then go and try it, said I should have brough it to him and let them check it out. I told him I needed an apointment to have them pull the rear plug and put the anti-seeze on they neglected to do. He then proceded to ask me where in the manual it said to put anti-seeze on, I about come unwrapped. After our conversation I dug out the service manual to verify the service interval on the plugs and sure enough they should have been inspected at 1,000 miles on mine and 10,000 miles on my dads. I also have the page and section along with what it says in the manual about putting anti-seeze on the plugs written down so I can quote it and tell him where to find it.
