mvengineer,
Does the bag remain rigid, even when empty? Is it rigid enough to serve as a backrest, even when empty or not packed fully/tightly?

D-Dawg, The BR3400 is more than strong enough empty for use as backrest. I just came in from trying to collapse wifes BR3400 and it held shape ok.

found the Xelement xs-689 fpr $99. Looks like it will meet the same need as the more expensive Saddlemen touring backrest bag. It is at Leatherup.com

Just did mine today.Used the 54099-10 bracket and the smooth backrest. The install is a little more of a task than I thought it would be.I did as the instructions said and removed the battery and went step by step.HD's instructions look like I wrote them, very confusing. All and all it will be worth it on my long rides.Very grateful to have an adjustable back rest and a Road Zep. saddle.

Being the stuborn type I used the instructions as a guide and refused to remove the battery. Thought I had screwed the pooch when I pulled the 2nd bolt and the bank angle sensor dropped. I managed to get ahold of it and pull it back up so I could get a bolt in.
