Default Harley pistons # 22122-99A

I figured it's time to check things out on my 2000 Fatboy and got a little surprise. The shoes are pitted and not quite 1/2 worn, but the surprise was the cams are Andrews 37B. While I was turning the engine over with the rear tire I figured I'd check out the pistons and cylinders. What I found were HD # 22122-99A pistons. I can't seem to find any info on them, anyone have any idea what they are? They do have a small dome on them. I bought the bike used, so I have no idea on it's history and I thought it always had kind of a ratty idle.

Looks like that may be the individual part number for 22661-99A. If it is you have a 95” with around 10.25:1 compression. Nice surprise.

Always suspected it had a cam, but never knew it had those pistons and 95" (if that's truly what they are) Really wasn't anything strong running.

Agree with JP7. The 22661-99a is the part number for the 10.25:1 SE cast piston kit, i.e. complete kit with pistons, pin and ringshe part number 22122-99a is likely the part number for a single piston.

By the looks of things, those cams and pistons don't really belong together. Explains why it rattled if I wasn't paying attention. I really don't know why it was such a dog. One thing I did notice was after the cam chest was drained, the next day I pulled the cams and oil pump out and a lot of oil came out of the case. Could it have been sumping causing the low power?

I'm no expert but I think it could be wise to do a compression test. I think you could be a little high. A good tune may help, if not a thicker head gasket might be all you need to fix that if you plan to keep the pistons and cam you have.

A little late for a compression test. It all started as a cam shoe and inner bearing inspection and I thought it was just a stock 88. I was in touch with Scott at Hillside before I looked at the pistons and realized they were domes. Have to call him back and get a new plan.

95"er, 37 cams and 10.25 pistons could be a tuning challenge; CCP should be up around 200psi with the OEM head gasket and chamber volume. Do the heads have compression releases? Was the motor hard to turn over on a hot restart? Has this combination been dyno tuned? You say that "it was such a dog"; elaborate please; still some unknowns; hard to help with limited information.

Can't assume sumping though. Softail oil tanks will drain inot the crank case; some quicker than others. Depends on how long it has been since the motor was running but while sumping might not be ruled out, more likely that is oil drained from the tank; check the oil level in the tank to confirm. Look for a pinched or damaged o-ring at the pump spigot and fit to the scavenge port but you won't know if the motor was sumping until you get it running again.

No compression releases, hot restarts were mostly fine, rarely a kickback. I did get a kit from CV and go up on the jets in the stock carb, plugs were clean and tan. No dyno tune, It did have a SE ignition box # 31778-00 (no dials ) and a Supertrapp Supermeg on it. It ran fine, about the same as my stage 1 05 Lowrider. I was just surprised when I opened it up and saw what was in it.
