Welcome to the forum! I wouldn't sweat putting a cover and lock around the handle bars because lets face it, if they want to steal the bike, they're going to find a way to do so. That's why we pay so much for insurance..
A disc lock might be more effective than a cable lock around the handles.
A cover it never a bad idea in cold weather..

Thanks for the warm welcome and the advice. I never would have considered the part about the bike blowing over. I'm leaning toward just taking it to work in a backpack and not putting it on again until I get home, unless it's raining.
