This year I was finally able to afford (LOL) my first Softtail Standard 05. After to many years on Hondas, Kawi's, it has been SO nice to be able to hold my head up on the road. Not that my other bikes were not fun and or did not give me many memories. Two weeks after getting it I had it torn down and did my own custom paint job. I get lots of people tell me they like it. My wife is giving me some new Python III pipes for Christmas and I am dieing to put them on, but I also do not want to damage my stock EFI. So like so many others in here asking the same question (l have read a lot of them- but most are on Carbs) I would like to know from you pro's if there is a issue to put them on without getting my system remaped or having to buy the power commander. I do not mind buying if it is nessasary but if it is not really needed that would help the marriage if you know what I mean. (Wife- "What do you mean you need a power commander?")
Thanks for all the great information in here and I am glad to be apart of a very big family.
My understanding is Yes you will need to be remapped and PC or SERT is HIGHLY recommended for EFI bikes. The bike needs to be fine tuned so it doesn't run rich. SERT is supposed to have more tuning points than PC, but everyone is different in their opinions. Whatever you do, don't take the $150 upload, it will make the bike run, but not give you a performance boost.
This is obviously my own personal opinion. Many others here are true mechanics and will be able to give you a better information.
I just checked out your webpage. Very nice. Hey I have a good friend that lives out there, stationed at Yuma. Maj. Mike Leggens, do you by chance know him. He rides a hog also. It would make it a crazy small world if you did.
Cheers
Terry
