Welcome! Glad your on the road to recovery! I would go to the motorcycle forum and get info from those that ride Touring models and Softails. Go to your local HD dealer and gather info. try some on for size. As far as new or used. I like to shop around and find a good used one with low mileage and some extras, when I'm looking. This forums classifieds, ebay, craigs list, etc. I think you can get a better deal, but thats just me! Good luck to you!

+1, for an almost cross country ride and resale, look at the Ultra, IMHO.Good luck on your health, nothings more important!
The RK is a good cross between the full dress and the softails, might be a good fit for you.
But buying a bike is a very personal decision. One word of advice, don't short change yourself.
If you want a certain bike, but you are thinking it is too expensive and decide to settle for something else.
In a year, maybe less, you will be inloading the wrong bike to buy the one you should have bought to begin with.
So by trying to save money, you end up wasting some. If you are intersted in used, then you may find a good deal on a "Fly and Ride" bike. These are bikes that only HOG members can rent from HD Dealers. This means that they were always maintained by HD Techs, only ridden by people that own and know how to ride Harleys, and they are considerably cheaper than new. Just a thought, some people would never buy used, let alone a rental, but some people will.
Anyway, welcome from sunny San Diego, where it is always ridin' weather!
I just returned from a ride from the Chicago area through MO, AR, OK, TX, NM, AZ and back, total 4598 miles on my Herritage, I loved it. If you ride solo, it's a great versatile bike. If you ride two up, I'd suggest a touring bike like an Ultra Classic.
May your health continue to improve, I'm sure I speak for all here when I say, "we're puling for you!"
