Hi everyone. I joined the forum a while back, due to a recent interest in picking up a big twin, but just yesterday I took the plunge and purchased an 84 FXRT. I had been lurking, trying to learn all I could about the bikes, but since I made the purchase I figured I should make it official and introduce myself - LOL. I've been riding for a little over a year after a 10+ year hiatus - my first bike (10 years ago) was an 83 Honda Nighthawk, and last April I picked up an 07 Sportster. Man, talk about a change of pace going from the Sportster to the FXRT! My gut reaction taking off from the dealer where I got the FXRT was "What the &%$& have I gotten myself into!" I know I'm gonna have a hard time with remembering to check the fuel cut-off switch after being used to the EFI - LOL! But after 2 days of riding the FXRT I know I'll never go back! I am so stoked - this is the bike for me. And why did I go with the FXRT? Well, I love the Sporty, but I commute 140 miles a day, and wanting to start riding in to work more often I quickly found the Sportster's deficiencies in long-distance touring. I started looking for a bigger bike - I wanted a touring type bike with a fairing and decent bags, but when I test rode actual HD Touring Bikes (Street Glide, Road Glide and Road King) I just felt that they were all to big and bulky feeling. Out of those, however, the Road Glide and its fixed-frame fairing caught my attention. I was originally also seriously interested in picking up an FXDP (testing the touring bikes did convince me that floorboards rock!), but when I found some articles about the FXRTs I knew I had to have one. Yeah, I know they don't "look" like a Harley, but I've never been one to follow convention too much.
BTW - I will be putting the 07 Sportster up for sale if anyone is interested. Great condition, Pacific Blue Pearl, around 3.8k miles on it. I'll post pics and more info when I get it ready to sell.
Great to meet you all, and I look forward to reading and posting with ya'll
Bert
