Default Howdy!

Hi everyone. I've been lurking for a little while now, and figured that since I'm about to purchase my first Harley, that I would go ahead and join.

I've been seriously looking at the new 09 Sporty Iron in black. I've heard talk that Sportsters are too small for a guy 6'+. I'm 6'1, 170lbs, and I'm hoping that isn't the case. On Monday, I'm heading down to a couple of dealers to check on pricing and to sit on a couple of bikes, so I pray that the Iron fits me.

I'm new to bikes, and I'm getting my permit this week. My bike experience is pretty much nothing, but I've heard that sportsters are the easiest to learn on. I was thinking about getting a used bike, but I kind of want to get something that I won't need to get rid of for a while. I plan to keep it for at least 5 years. Engine power isn't a concern, since I'll probably upgrade the 883 to 1200 down the road. I plan on getting the SE Street Perf black shorty mufflers right off the bat, to add to the blacked out look, and to get a little more sound out of it.

I am a road cyclist, and all the same laws apply, so I don't think I'll have a problem navigating traffic. And I do plan on taking the training course within 30 days of getting the bike for some better skills and insurance drop.

Couple questions.

Do those pipes sound good? Do you think I'll need to take out the baffles/switch to other baffles?

Am I making a bad choice buying a new bike as a beginner?

Anyways, I'm glad to be here.

A fine machine for sure. I think you may be getting the cart before he horse by getting the bike first, rider course second. While so many folks refer to the 883's as girl bikes now, tht wasn't the case a few decades ago. They were the badboys of the day way back, and they fit all different sizes of riders just fine then, and they still do today. If some of the "girl bike" label is due to the smaller engine displacement and lower power.....then pretty much all current, stock air-cooled Harleys are "girl bikes" in the power department compared to modern inline 4's, V4's, or water cooled engines.
Enjoy the new bike, but just beware, riding a bicycle and riding a 500 some lb motorcycle are not in the same league.
