These forums have been a great tool in helping me decide just what bike is right for me. I figured I might as well join up and say hello!
Story is pretty typical. Stopped in at a Harley shop with a buddy (a Harley owner, of course) because he wanted to check out some parts. While he was busy with the shop folks, I made the mistake of sitting on a Nightster 1200. Salesperson cornered me in seconds, but I was back the next day and made an even bigger mistake.
I sat on a Dyna Low Rider.
I swear I sat on that bike and I felt like I already owned it. It was perfect. But damn if it wasn't pricey!
They pay me alright in the military, but not THAT well. I sat on a Street Bob next, and it felt damn fine, too, but just not as good as that sweet Low Rider...
At any rate, I'm attending a safety course this weekend and should have my license on Monday. I'm in Texarkana doing some training, but I get back to Fort Worth Tuesday. I'll be out of town AGAIN on Friday, but when I get back...yup, I'm off to Longhorn to check out the inventory. If I can find a way to knock off just a LITTLE bit (as in, a couple grand) of the price on the Low Rider, I'm getting one. If not, I'm picking up the Street Bob cuz that one is a damn easy payment.
Anybody own a Low Rider? What about a Street Bob? I love the bars on the Street Bob, but that Low Rider...it just feels like sex. I'll have to see if I can't get test 'em before I buy. My riding experience is extremely limited, I've got maybe a total of 2 hours of riding time on two different bikes, and that's pushing it.
It sounds like you've already found out this forum is a great resource for any questions you may have.
I (and no one else) can answer your question about the low vs. the bob. It's all about you and what you like. Personally, my only experience on Dynas is a test ride on a Fat Bob, which I really liked.
On negotiating the price/payment issue, have you looked at used bikes or eBay? I just started riding again after a 15 year break. I bought both my bikes on eBay and paid less for both than I would have for either one new. I bought a Sportster 1200C because I learned to ride on a Sportster and loved it. 5 months later I bought a Road King cause I wanted a bigger, more comfort oriented bike with more luggage capacity. I couldn't give up the Sportster, so now I have 2.

It's worth looking into eBay or Craigslist if you want to save some cash.
Part of it is, for me, I want my first bike to be MINE and no one elses. Yes, I understand the financial logic of buying a used bike (more money for mods and play), and I also understand that I'm more likely to lay my bike down till I become more experienced....and let's face it, even a John Wayne type is likely to sniffle a bit when laying down his brand new 15k+ Harley Davidson.
But...it's a used bike. It was someone else's FIRST bike.
Maybe it's the irrational thinking of a new rider, but that's just the way I feel at the moment. I may feel completely different when I look at how much debt I have after the purchase, but I'd rather not think about that just now....
Sergeant Major, thanks for your service!
