After lurking here for a while, I have finally bought my first Harley and can now hope to contribute!
Not new to biking - have constantly owned bikes since the mid-70's. Currently own a '06 Multistrada and a '68 Norton "racer". It was the Ducati that encouraged the move to Harley. I was on a 10-day, 5,000 km trip through the Pacific Northwest. I thought my clutch was overheating in Bend Oregon. It dawned on me that as far as I could tell, the nearest Ducati dealer was in Seattle. That's a long way to go!
By comparison, it seemed to me that anywhere else on my trip, if I saw 2 or more houses together, there would probably be a Harley mechanic in one of them. So, Harley it is.
I chose the Dyna, since I generally prefer sport bikes (over the last 8 years I have also had a '05 FJR1300 and a '01 CBR929RR) and so i wanted what i perceived as its better handling. After ghosting eBay for several months, I took the leap and bought a '05 Super Glide Sport.
I preferred it's dual brakes to the single front on the others. My only experience had been riding a friend's '08 Lowrider. While I liked it, I wanted to spend a little less, plus I do like the black engine of the Super Glide.
Main use for the Harley - general riding plus US touring. I am not sure it can or will replace the Ducati, which I love and have EXTENSIVELY modified.
Speaking of mods: I would prefer to drop the bars, perhaps drag style (recommendations? - it has 14" high bars); forward foot controls are on it and I am certain I would prefer mids; and a solo seat. I will probably do my usual electrical upgrades and absolutely go HID for the lighting.
Welcome from the West Coast. You picked one fine Dyna! pics?
I can only suggest putting a True Track brace on it, and some bags if you are touring. The rest is taken care of with the DX
