I recently completed the Motorcycle Safety Foundation Rider Coach classes. During my training I was the only student who rode to class on a Harley. I heard it all, from the oil leaks to the remarks about riding a bike with the technology of a John Deere tractor. Even the instructors got in the mix. Most said it was in jest but trust me in some cases it was not. Did it bother me? Maybe, a little, but I wrote it off as a class action case of ignorance. I want to point out to you that riders of other brands have opinons on what a Harley is or is not. In fairness, we too have opinions on the bikes they ride....it's ok either way, but they are just opinions.
Your husband's instuctor should know that his vote doesn't count on what ride a student picks, his job ends when your husband completes the course. As far as the other's, they are students, what experience do they have to draw from? Here are the facts: Harley's are as reliable as any metric bike out there. They have class, history, and the greatest fan base of riders and non-riders alike of any motorcycle in the world. Tell your husband to be proud to own a Harley, don't look back, and come back to the forum often where you will find friends who support your choice.
Hi Helen, welcome to the forum from Oxford, England. Tell hubby to ignore the bs merchants that are telling him that Harleys are unreliable because they haven't got a clue as to what they're talking about. I was the recipient of such 'advice' when I was about to buy my Fattie, I ignored it and am I ever glad I did because I'm having more fun on a bike than ever before (37 years on the road).
Harleys are as reliable as any other bike on the road and more so than many. My advice for what it's worth is buy the bike and don't worry - you're gonna love it.
