New here, from Delaware
I used to look at the softails and just stare at all the motor and oil lines and the starter and the regulator, the horshoe oil tank, etc. etc. etc... and think it's real eye candy. Lots of detail.
I wandered around the parts racks and thought this is cool- you don't have to go to Kuryakin to get the only alternate version of a part that you want to change from stock- Harley offers a few "THEMES".
Then I walked out to my VTX and looked at the motor and saw the plasti-chrome covers and it just looked sort of "plain" without any exposed working parts and I felt kind of dissapointed. But the second I jumped on and rode I was in love again... the bike is a stripped, raw riding, pegged bobber feel that's low and tough. It's like riding a chainsaw, and it's a fearless FTW feeling knowing it's nimble and fast. Plus the women love it, it's fun watching them scan the tank looking to see if it's a Harley at the red lights. With the short strippers it actually sounded like a Harley when my carb was a little gummy, lol.
Fast forward to the first time I laid eyes on a Denim Black Fat Boy with the chrome wheels. I knew I was in love with that bike. So I worked out a deal with the sales guy- a sweet sweet deal. But I brought the woman up the day I was set to sign and showed her the Fat Boy. She looked around at the other bikes and said "What"s THAT?!!!" She was looking at a silver Road King Classic. The more I thought about it the Fat Boy was a Harley version of what I already had (kind of funny considering Honda copied the Fat Boy when they made the VTX). So I bought the bagger instead...gotta love it.
Now I'll tell ya I take them out for a little tear-up around town and I like them both. The Harley does have one hell of a sweet throaty rumble though, and it's smooth highway ride is just like butter. Sixth gear, cruise control, floorboards, ABS- all this stuff isn't on the VTX. The Road King is growing on me more and more and once I get the ergonomics right it will be more comfortable on the 2 hour+ long rides.
So here I am, an unapologetic metric AND Harley owner, saying "hey".
I've used that word many times in here. We pick out the bike we like/love the looks of them we have make them fit us. Usually costing us $400 for a seat and $800 for bars...
I was lucky that the bike I love the looks of also has one of the best Ergonomics of all the Harley's IMO, theirs a lot of others that think the same as a lot of RK owners install the Heritage bars for comfort. Try them U may like those, still others like the taller apes.. up to U.
My stock seat also is just right for my big ole butt.. So I was able to put that $1200 or so on stg1 and cams instead of a seat and bars..
We, wife and I, ride 2-5 hrs almost daily also, mostly on country roads 30-50 mph.
and for 4 yrs and 30k we still love to ride. Hope Ur able to also.
