I'm trying to install a 2001 FLHT trans in a 82 FXR. This could solve two problems for me (while adding 50 more). First is open primary belt drive set up. 2nd. is get rid of the ugly space wasting stock oil tank.
Need to know if my SS oil pump on the shovel needs to be gravity fed or will it pull oil from the under trans engine oil pan on the late style set up? I know the pumps look very different but do they function the same?
Thanks.
Like to know how you"re goin to bolt that tranny to that engine as there are no bolt or mounting points on the back of a shovel ..that tranny is alot longer than a 4 speed ..will you have room to mount it and still find a belt long enough to make the distance ? plus the oil pan sticks out the back ...clearence between the rear wheel and the oil pan ? ...if all that works you can always drill and tap a hole in the oil pan to line up with the inlet on the S&S...any pump has a certain amount of suction ..as to weather or not it is strong enough to lift the oil up out of the bottom of the pan ..I don't know ... cause this tyle of pan is like an automotive type where the fresh oil is pulled up from the bottom ....
welcome from california...........You could experiment with a container of oil and a hose and see how far down below the pump will it lift it from
Thanks OldWildWally, the trans in this FXR is a 5 speed with the rear mount sharing the swing arm pivot bolt, it's the same long style trans as all the rubber mounts. And the frames look the same. There is a lot of room under there. This is were the oil filter currently is plus the swing arm is extended 2". The engine to trans adapter thing is not going to work but with the engine and trans bolted to the primary plate I can make a new one. But I'm not going thru all this to find out that the shovel should be gravity fed. Worried about start up with the thick cold oil. Please keep 'em coming. Collectively we have a lot of knowledge and if it was easy anyone could do it! Thanks again.
