I just got back onto the bikes after a 10+ year break and stepped right into a 2005 883 Sportster Custom (pictures of the red beastie to follow!). Only mods on it when I got it were forward controls and I shelled out the money for a K&N filter kit.
Plans so far is to check on the legality of the side mount license plate kit and a freshen up of the paint job. And maybe a better seat!

I would say they make up about roughly ~10% of the bikes on the road and all cruiser style bikes account for ~40% where I live. It is hard to tell though, if you go to a rally or hang out at bike nite at the local Tim Hortons it will be 100% cruiser style bikes.
