Wow, I signed up way back in 2006, but just recently got my first real Harley. My current ride is an 89 Sportster 883. I got it in running, but not rideable condition. It would start and idle and that was it. Turns out the previous owner had the needle and spring purch installed backwards in the CV carb. I took it to my local Harley specialist place in my town (KOPP Cycles) and they took the time to show me what was wrong and teach me a few things. This was all done free, and now they have a loyal customer.
Anyway, this thing has been a little bit of an adventure so far. I had to replace the sprocket cover as it was broken where the peg bolts into it. It was missing one of the front turn signals and mirror on the right side. (yes the bike was crashed on that side at some point in its life)
I put a new rear tire on it only to get a flat fifty miles later. This was my fault for not replacing the tube along with the tire. Tuesday the regulator went out, so I am now waiting for the new one to show up.
I have done a lot of reading here, and followed the advise to get a shop manual right away. It has been very helpful. There is still a bunch of little things I want to do to it, but just riding is such a pleasure.
