Welcome to the Forum. I too got an older bike as my first Harley, a 1988 Softail that had sat for quite a while. The road to reliability was not easy. It had on an S&S shorty much like what your picture shows. That carb was my worst stumbling block. After many hours of fiddling with stuck float and bad accelerator pump as well a rebiuld that thing still would not work right. I broke down and bought a brand new Harley butterfly carb. I've been smilling ever since. Don't forget to but on an inline fuel filter. I put one of those glass ones that you can clean. There was a lot of old junk coming off the tank walls and kept plugging stuff up. Now I just clean out the filter about once a week and all is good. The amount of junk getting in the filter is less all the time.
The good folks on this site are really helpful with any problems you may have, no matter how trivial. They have steered in the right direction qhite a few times. Don't forget to do a search of the forums as your first step, that has saved me from posting questions already answered. I also acquired an owner's manual and a service manual, however it took a while for those to get to me from Millwakee.
Have fun, enjoy wrenching and enjoy the ride, keep it safe.
Thanks for the advice Pat,
The carb seems to be working properly I just need to check the timing also as there is some hesitation and adjust the carb some more. I rode it once when I fist got it to the house but it sat do to my job and I had to clean the tank filter and got some crap out of the tank and the carb. It seemed to have plenty of power and good pick up that suprised me I didn't except that from a harley. Can't wait to get on the road got the tiltle and a turn signal in the mail. I enjoy wrenching I do it on my cars so now it includes a bike. Thanks for the welcome from everyone this seems to be a good board.
