Problem with oil pressure at different intervals--Oil filter will drain out and the dipstick will read way over filled--had this problem last summer one time--Started again to see if pressure would return--it did and I rode all summer with no problems with pressure--when this happened and I got back home I changed the oil filter as I thought that maybe the check mech. in the filter was not working. Today I was getting the bike cleaned up and out of storage and getting ready for the coming riding season--started up and everything fine--shut it off and cleaned for a while and when I started it back up--no oil pressure--same thing that happened last summer--bike has 40000 miles and never one problem ever until now. I use AMSOIL 20-50 syn. oil and K&N filters. I've been restoring classic cars and rebuilding engines as a hobby for over 40 years. The Harley Puzzles me as I never have to work on it--it has never had a break down--been a great bike--Hope there someone out there that can give me a hint on what may be possibly the problem---Thanks for reading post, Gary- ERIE RIDER
Welcome from Hampton Roads Virginia. You may want to post this question in another more tec area since this is the welcome area. Just guessing but I bet you have some damage in oil pump. It's a duel two rotor pump and the return side is bigger then the pressure side so the actual crankcase of the engine normally only has about a 1 1/2" of oil in it and is considered drysump. The actually oil tank on your bike is a tank hooked to but divided off from the transmission. Since most of engine is roller bearing idle oil pressure is quite low at idle and designed that way so the oil does not get too hot at idle when the air is not blowing to cool motor. Bet the o-ring between the rotors in the pump is damaged. How are you reading oil pressure? Sure you do not have too much oil in it? When changed, only put enough to get it on stick, start motor so oil filter fills, turn it off and then top off to middle of stick between full and add. When you turn it off after it's fully hot from a 20 mile run it should be no higher then full mark. I have read on here that some bikes after sitting will drain off slightly and raise the level on the stick. Mine does not do it. If I were you I would get a oil filter from Harley and see if that helps. These engine do not need a restrictive oil filter and a small micron filter will cause problems with the already low pressure

Thanks for the reply--the oil level is fine and within specs. I have a harley oil pressure guage on bike--reads around 30-35 lbs pressure at 50-60 mph. At idle it goes down to about 10 lbs. What has me baffled is that the oil resevoir is way over full and the filter is almost empty-second time that this has happened--would it be a good idea to R&R oil and filter and prime pump through filter orfice--Airlock--Stuck relief valve- ?????

7-10 is normal idle. the 30-35 is the normal relief valve setting showing it is working..How can you tell filter is empty? Filter is downstream of pump. On a TC both sides of oil pump are unfiltered oil but then filtered before going thru engine.. An EVO pumps the return oil thru the filter on the way to the oil bag. So in theory the oil back to the pressure side is clean. Is your 02 a EVO?
