New to the forum and the whole motorcycle thing. Looking at getting a sportster very early next season Feb 2014ish. My favorite is the 72 in black denim but it's a bit expensive for a first time own so I'm looking at a nightster or an iron. I will be taking the msf course later this year. I'm waiting to see if my work will pay for it; I'm military. I'm looking forward to getting myself on two wheels and start enjoying cruising to work and getting some serious MPGS while not in a crap box Prius
I am also in the military. Depending on the installation you are on they should not only pay for it, but offer the class on post. Start talking to other riders on post, and they should be able to direct you to the right person for more info. There is usually someone who is charge of keeping track of who rides, and that they have all the necessary safety crap required by that particular post to ride.
If I was a smaller guy the '72 would certainly be my choice ride. The style of that bike is right up my alley. I wouldn't sweat the price personally. It's better to get what you really want in the long run. Welcome to the boards.

I've already talked to our safety rep. Budget cuts. Our base doesn't offer a class they send people to the local community college for the class. I have to wait until the next fiscal year to find out if they will pay for it but since I'm already waiting to just buy a bike I'm not to worried about it now.
About the bike I'm torn between the three bikes. I like the 72 but it has such a small fuel tank. I like the nightster a lot but it needs a 21 inch front and some mini apes. And the iron with the 883 I'm pretty sure once I can get on it I will and the smaller motor might disappoint sooner rather than later. But i don't know. 13k for the 72 is a lot more than 7.5k on a gently used nightster is a big difference
