Default Sportster wheel question

I was looking at stock wheel pictures and noticed that both the rotor and sprocket appear to be the same bolt pattern. Would it be possible to put them on the opposite side and put the wheel on backward? Or possibly the wheels were tapped for the rotor and sprocket on the wrong sides from the factory?

The reason I ask is that my 01, the tire rubs the fender and belt with a 140 tire but has nearly a 1/2" gap on the left side of the fender. Looking through other threads I see that some bikes have that issue and some don't, even though they may be the same model bike.

Not possible... 3/8" bolts for Rotor, 7/16" bolts for Pulley

Well, I guess anything is possible, if you try hard enough

Don't know the history of your bike and wheel...maybe just spacer issue, but a 140 might be a little wide for 2003-earlier Sportys. They uses a MT90 (130).

Swapping the wheel over won't solve the problem! Your rear tyre should be roughly central in the fender, regardless of how wide the tyre is. It's possible the fender is off centre, or even the frame out of true.

I don't think it's the fender. That wouldn't explain the rubbing on the belt, guard and I think the bolt heads for the pully are eerily too close to a nut on the inside of the swing arm. The bike has a solid aluminum rear wheel

I agree with multihdrdr - I would look at your spacers - maybe there in reversed/ backwards or just the wrong ones.

I know someone that did this on the same year sporty and had to change out fender mount bolts also to stop the rubbing, opened up a can of worms trying to go bigger. Also watch out for the electrical wires, tire cut through them also.

I took the wheel back loose and noticed with the axle loose there was about a 1/8" gap with the spacers and swing arm. I put some washers on the right side and some behind the pully. That fixed the rubbing issues but the wheel still looks the same as far as being out. I know I could get spacers to fix the of center issue but then I would run into issues with the brake because it lines up perfect with the stock spacer on that side. I'm starting to lean towards getting a whole new frame and starting over because that was my plan when I got it. The bike is a salvage with a clean title that I picked up for $1000. I was surprised it even ran honestly. I found out the triple trees are bent this weekend as well.

Aside from having some possible deviations in parts caused by the "accident", and unless you are doing some "custom" work, this isn't magic...post some photos instead of just "talking"...if you wanted/needed some help
