Default Wheel swap question

Okay guys. Question. I have a 1988 FLHTC 16 inch wheels that are stock. Here’s my question. Will a 17 inch stock 2009 Streetglide set work on my bike? Are the wheel bearings / rotors / etc all exchangeable?

I have a chance to pick up a set for cheap but wanted to see if they would fit.

thanks
Bro Webb

you can probably get the front to fit but the rear would be major work since it's a 5" wheel with a 180. I believe you have the 3/4" axles an bearings if so you can get 25 mm to 3/4 adapters for like 12 bucks off ebay. probably gonna need spacers for the wheels an maybe the rotors. the rotors are probably larger diameter but the old ones might bolt on the hub if you open up the rotor center hole.

There are a number of complications, so while the front can be made to fit it isn't a simple bolt-in. The later wheel has slightly larger diameter rotors, so won't fit your calipers. Your stock rotors have smaller diameter central mounting holes and won't swap over to the later hub. The later wheel has larger ID bearings, although they can be swapped to suitable ones. In addition your bike has a front wheel driven speedo drive to take into account. I have a later 18" front wheel in my 1990 Glide, however I also swapped the fork sliders to mount Brembo calipers etc.

I recommend you visit the Evo section, where you will find several members who have done similar conversions. There is no single solution, but you can find more of what is possible.

Short answer, it'll cost way too much. Calipers and lowers for the front to fit a 41 mm? Then there's the rear. You'll need a heartland swingarm upgrade kit to accept that 5 inch rim, largest tire you can put on under your current fender is a 150...

The 2006-8 SG wheels are the same style as the '09. The older rear SG wheel had a bolt on cush drive, with that removed you should be able to adapt the rear wheel to your bike with some effort. On the front wheel if the rotor diameter is too big you can have them turned down at a machine shop and it should fit again with some effort. I have a rear wheel that I need to do the swap on my '94. I have a '15 SG 19" Enforcer wheel on my 3/4" axle. It can be done if you find someone to assist that can think outside the "parts book box". I had to hunt around for a while to find that guy and it turned out great.

everytimes the problems are on the rear wheel . a this moment i have the same problem, i want to swap my original 16x3 wheel for a 18x3,5 .
to me , the best way is keeping the old axle , buy a new rim , and change the spokes for the correct lenght. i have a workshop spécialized on spokes making and wheels assembly 10 miles from my house.

adapt a totally different wheel is a lot of work , money , and in my opinion , more expensive in the end than the way i'm thinking on.

The short answer is no...you can make them fit, but it will become quite expensive if you can't do all the work yourself...
