Default Front axle differences

Stopped at a dealer just looking around a newer models. I noticed the front axles in the Tri-Glides had a cotter pin going through the nut. However, all other Touring models had just the regular nut.

Looked at part numbers....

41547-07A on the Touring models
83889-09 on the Tri-Glides

I kinda like the added security of the cotter pin....anyone know why other models didn’t get it either. Could the bikes get upgraded to the Tri-Glide axle?

Or did the Tri-Glides have a problem that required a different axle that required a cotter pin?

Thanks....just something I noticed.....

I suspect it's as simple as the front wheel, forks and axle are subjected to very different loads on a trike, compared with a solo.

Alright.....for anyone interested.....I found out the story. This came from one of the Safey Engineers.

41547-07A.....this axle came first when the 25mm bearings came out. It was originally designed for a added lock washer.....But, it was found it was not needed. Interestingly, the previous axle one inch had the lock washer. According to him.....it was cost saving for Harley to delete the lock washer since it was found it was not needed for the application.

83889-09 came out for the Tri-Glides. It was the exact same axle but with the drilled hole for the cotter pin. He said with the additional weight plus added vibration and the front wheel takes much more stress because it doesn’t lean.

Having come from Aviation maintenance....we used cotter pins in hundreds of applications. No way that fastener is coming loose.

Anyways.....we upgraded a 2010 Ultra Limited with this axle and the cotter pin. Never had an issue with the nut backing off....but it is a piece of mind.

If you like extra security.....this ones for you.
