Default Need advice on front brakes

Hello,

On my 2006 FLHXI "SG" I plan on doing some front brake work. What tools do I need to successfully complete a pad change? What size torx socket would I be needing to open up the caliper? Do I need a bleeder tool or just pump the brake hand lever?

Thanks in advance! This is my first time working on my bike.

I believe the brakes you have are common with mine, an '07 FXD.

I just did my brakes, and all i think I needed was a standard and philips screwdriver, and a 12-point 1/4" socket. the socket was hardest to find, and I finally stopped at a grand auto, after leaving several 'high-end' tool dealers and not finding it.... and there it was hanging on the shelf in the cheap-tool section. sheesh.

anyways, once you get the tools, the job is pretty straight forward. I didn't need to bleed the brakes, but you will need to pop the cover off the reservior and when you spread the pads, fluid will backfill into the res. It can splash onto the bike, so I'd suggest a towel or rags to contain the fluid. the service manual has the complete proceedure, but it's not hard.

Thanks for your advice "Splitting Lanes". Would you happen to know what #Number (size)torx socket head you needed to open up the caliper?

I'm going to try and go to a big cheap tool wharehouse like "Harbor Frieght" they should have this tool ! Would be nice to know the size to get that way hopefully buy just that piece instead of the whole costly set.

you don't open the caliper up. you slide a flat-bladed screwdriver in between the pad and disk, and gently spread the pads apart. the caliper never gets opened...

oh, okay.....sorry you did mention what socket you needed "12 point" 1/4" socket. I wonder if my 2006 calipers are that same as your 2007?

Like I said I've never done any brake work on my Harley yet just on cars and ATV's.

Oh, I didn't know brake pads could be accessed on this type of caliper by just using a screwdriver..

thanks...

I think your calipers are the same.

I understand, I thought I would have to take the caliper apart also... but you don't. once you get the pads spread, you remove the whole caliper from the fork leg (that's what you need that funky 12pt 1/4" for) then the pads come right out.

then you put the new ones in, and slide the whole caliper back over the disk and replace the bolts that hold the caliper on and tighten. i think that's it, if my memory from two weeks ago serves correct!

A lot of great information can be found here, but go ahead and buy a manual. Money well invested.

WOW!..Thanks to all for the great info here. Doin' my brakes for 1st time also, and although I'm not a stranger to most tools, I couldn't get a "tool" for this from the local Harley Dealer..AFTER I purchased a new tire, rotor, brake pads and oil & filter.
I mean all he hadda say was "you need a 1/4 inch 12 point wrench or thin-walled socket"..That's all....sheesh!
THE THING LOOKS LIKE A REVERSE TORX !!!(Specialty tool and all that? NOT!)

He DID say: Go to SEARS.......looks like I'll be goin' to Moroney's insteada The dealer in WURSTBORO, even though it's another half hour away.

Again, THANK YOU ALL for the info here, it's gonna be warm and sunny 2morrow,and me and the Road King are gonna be riding thanks to y'all.
