Going to replace tire on the back of a 08 Ultra. What is widest tire that can be fit? I will post on the touring and General sections also. Thanks
Depends on brand of tire. Stock 08 came with 140, can use a 150 if ya run Metzler. Not sure on other brands like Avons. You may need to also trim the rubber flap (stone guard) on the belt guard as it may rub especially when you back the bike up. You can go wider but that required much modification such as new swingarm, trans pulley spacers, etc. not to mention lots of cash. Good luck
While a 150/80B16 ME880 will "fit" the rear of your '08 Ultra with (presumably) no mods, Metzeler themselves doesn't recommend anything larger than a 140/90B16 or the stock alpha-numeric size (MU85B16...they make both sizes).
The reason appears to be that the while the 150mm tire fits the stock wheel, it also has a much lower load capacity than a 140mm...something like about 200 lbs.! Kind of an important factor on a big touring bike...you run a serious risk of tire overload. So...personally I wouldn't take that risk, if I were you.
Yes that is what I was seeing. I did find one of the tires was within 50 lbs or so of the rating I just have to go back and check again.
Anyone know off hand the width of the stock rim?
Ultra110,
I have a 06 Street Glide, last year I installed a 160 Metzler tire with no mods to my bike. I did not think it would fit, but the installer told me he did it all the time, and I guess he was right. Hope this helps.
