Default rear brake squealing ?

I was just out riding around and noticed that during the last couple of rides my rear brake is squealing - does this mean that it's time to change the pads ? I've only had the bike for about 1 year (it's an older fxr), and I haven't had to do anything to the brakes, yet. Are these built like a car, where when the pads get worn to a low limit they squeal ? I also had a look, but couldn't actually see the edge of the pads to see how much they are worn.

Not hard to take off and have a look, It may need brakes. If you can't do it yourself take it somewhere to have it looked at. After all they are brakes a very important part of your safety.

I had the same thing (rear brake squealing) happen today for the first time on my 2005 Electra Glide Classic. The bike has about 30,000 miles on it, but they are mostly road miles...... very little city riding.

BTW, I just had the 30,000 mile service done a few months ago, and the Harley dealer didn't say anything about the brakes being worn. I would think that if the brakes were getting worn, they would have mentioned it.

So, does anyone have any input? Could it just have been some dirt or something that got in there to make them squeal?

My rear brakes have squealed since my bike had 1 mile on it.

Mine start squealing a bit after I changed the brake fluid.

Since some dirt got dislodged from the change, I think I may have had a frozen pad that got freed up.

Gave both pads a strong dose of brake cleaner, cleaned up around the pistons a bit,
and the problem has gone away.

Gotta get in there and have a look; if you can see the pads, clean them.

If you can't, change them.

Mine were worn down really thin. I had really weak rear brakes. I changed them out, and now they do squeak on me. I think I'm going to have to take it apart again and clean it really well. Hopefully mine will improve too.

When mine squeal a little bit, I blow out the calipers for about 5 seconds per caliper with an air compressor nozzle...it seems to work.
