So here is my tire caper from last Saturday.
I went on the Flag Day Run to Golden Gate National Cemetery.
Almost home coming up on my exit(doing about 70), the rear tire starts going flat (Not a blowout!!) I have to tell you, those Dunlop tires are sturdy !! I can see why they ride like truck tires. Those things are practically run-flats. The freeway is about a mile & a 1/2 from my house. I was able to ride on home.
I probably wouldn't try that with a front tire , but it could be do-able.
I am due for new tires, due to age, not tread wear (I know!! Get out & ride more!!) I was considering the Metzlers for the better ride and so on. I guess my question is, in a situation like that, would they hold up as well?
As it turned out, there was a screw in the tire. I took these pics the next day. As you can see the sidewalls are still holding up. Incredible !!! I know there's no air in it.
Any opinions or comments would really be appreciated.
ive run metzlers and found it to be a good tire , wear life was about half due to the softer compound of tire .went back to dunlop just cause it s solid tire, that delivers good all around service.
At 9,000 miles I replaced my rear tire w/ Metzler ME880. Liked it so well that I ordered another for the front. Superior handling to the Dunlop on wet & dry pavement. Have heard from many riders that they last about the same.
Try a search--there have been many threads on this.
Don't forget to check/replace your wheel bearings.
Purely coincidental....Monday was riding to my job. Granted, my rear tire was due for replacement but...anyways, picked up a nail or something. Was bopping along and noticed the handling got squirrely rather quickly. Pulled over and son of a pup....rear tire going flat. 8 miles out of town. It did not pop the bead. Did not have a tire plugging kit. WTF...tire is shot...still on the bead. Put the flashers on and stayed on the shoulder. 8 miles. At 15mph. Got to gas station. Tried filling tire. Air came out as fast as it went in.
Found the hole. Anyways, that tire was shot, but I was rather pleased that the (much maligned) Dunlop 402 got me into town. The story is much longer but I put on used tire I had in the garage. It will get me home (130 miles). Just ordered two Michelin Commanders from Jake Wilson. $60 per tire.
