OK, I have been on a quest for a set of floating rotors for my Crossbones. I recently found out that the HD floating rotors will fit the Crossbones, despite what the P&A book says. One thing that did get mentioned to me was that the Springer utilizes a floating caliper. The person who told me that is a bike mechanic and he also said thet he isn't sure if you should use a floating rotor and a floating caliper. Doing some reading, it seems that any single piston caliper, such as the one one my Crossbones is considered floating, due to the way that the piston applies pressure to the pad. Does anyone know of a reason why you should not use them in combination?

What are you trying to achieve with a floating rotor? Saying that a single piston caliper is floating because it applies pressure to the pad doesn't make any sense to me. That's how all calipers work, unless there is a lot of slop in the way the pads are guided. When a rotor floats it allows itself to constantly realign with the pads in the caliper. I don't know what all of the benefits are, but they may run cooler and they are, at least in my experience, quieter. I wouldn't think that a floating rotor will cause any problems. There are alternatives to H-D floating rotors. Just find one with the same bolt pattern. I would upgrade the pads at the same time.
