Hello all does anyone know what the biggest tire for rear 1996 dyna convertible will allow with belt drive. Without changing wheel size, also open to other suggestions thanks for any help
Hi from the UK and welcome to HDF. Your bike probably has a 3" wide rim. The stock tyre size on most Harleys is MT or 130/90. The other sizes that will fit the rim are MU or 140/85, also 150/80, so that covers all the options available for your wheel size. Anything wider is not wise!
Next thing to take into account is the room available in your bike, the single limiting feature being tyre to belt clearance. If you have a 1 1/2" wide belt, it is unlikely you can get in anything wider than MU and you may have to trim the belt guard to give enough clearance.
You can fit a spacer behind the rear pulley to get a little extra clearance, which will help with an MU, and MAY help you get in a 150, but that cannot be guaranteed. Some people on HDF have got in a 150, but others haven't. I couldn't when I tried and there is not an obvious reason why that should be.
Safest thing is to try a MU, which will let you check again for clearances, then try a 150 next time if it looks like one will fit. Be aware that nominal size like 150 wide, is no guarantee that is the actual fitted width. Mine was actually 153mm and this can also vay between brands. Fitting wider tyres is not science, but black magic!
