i have 2 disks up front on my 2001 dyna 5000 mi on it - last year i changed the pads blead the brakes all good - this year i took the disks off to clean/polish them i did not polish the part that comes in contact with the pads but the more interior- put them back on and now it pulsates when i start to come to a stop - yea i may have gotton some wax on the rotor where the pads make contact but i figured it would just wear off - pretty frustrating as its all self inflicted what going on here ? any help would be ...helpful... thanks jim
They are wrapped. Save your self a lot of hassle and replace them with floating rotors.
HD offers some lower coast ones it you look in the wish book carefully.
The floating rotors will last a life time and use new screws when replace them
thanks for the reply i will buy new ones - that sounds funny i got a problem with my xxx well then go buy the best xxx u can find end of problem seriously though i apricate the help but jeez how did i foul my old rotors ? they were perfect when i took them off to clean them - i put them back and warped ? i just dont get it ..hhhmmm
could it be that i didnt torque the disk bolts properly ? out of sequence ? im sure ive changed the orentation of the disc on the wheel ...is that a no no ?
Pulsation definitely means warped rotors. Maybe they got really hot during polishing and that warped them? Howe did you polish them? Are they 1 piece rotors?
I second the floating rotors option however the only true floating rotors available for Harley's that I know of and sell are made by EBC.
There are numerous options available in two piece and they will cool better than a 1 piece. The stock calipers on that Dyna are not known to warp rotors, however with the newer Brembo calipers on the baggers and v rods it has been an issue for some people. This happens due to the excessive amount of heat that the calipers create during braking.
I have a 2002 Dyna with dual disc as well and the rotors were quite warped when I bought the bike. One of these days I will put some new ones on and report back with results.
thanks for the reply - i just hand cleaned/polished the (duel front) rotors with "white diamand" metal polisher ..all by hand - i got wax on my disks ...noticed my brakes were lousy after i reinstalled - but thought the wax would wear away - but instead it overheated my rotors and wasped em out ...sound plausable ?

sounds plausable that they overheated and warped. If you have a dial indicator, you can raise the wheel off the ground, set up the dial indicator, rotate the wheel and find the high spot(s). Very gently tapping with a leather or rubber mallet and re-check several times - you may be able to true up the existing rotors. Patience is the key. Gentle taps and re-check.
Also - as a side thought - if you re-used the mounting bolts for the rotors, I would advise replacing them with new ones. They need to be torqued to the point where they are stressed and should be replaced rather than re-used.
Ok yea that sounds like a plan ....I will try it...thank u very much ..jeez I got to make sure I remove that wax build up on my new brake pads too .I had such good brakes ...I will also order up some new disc bolts... Thanks much for the advise . Hope others learn from my mistakes

You may not have caused it. Non-floating rotors are a bit strange they may last years and many miles or warp at 20K.
Once you go with a floating rotor you will never go back.
